Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
