EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the case was “another example” of linking government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans prior to the holiday period, alongside an active border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in return for increased assistance, following concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts point out that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international actions.
